Two million reviews.
Think about that for a minute: Two million people who felt strongly enough about their experience buying or servicing a car with a dealership to take time out of their busy schedules to write a review.
That’s how many reviews DealerRater has amassed since the company was founded in 2002. At the time, ratings for automotive dealers weren’t something you’d find online. Your only means of learning what it was like to purchase a car or service one at your local dealership was to ask people who had bought a car there.
The landscape has changed completely in the last 13 years. Online reviews have become a part of nearly every purchase anyone makes online, no matter how inexpensive or seemingly insignificant. Will I like this book? Is this movie I’m renting for .99 cents any good?
For consumers in the process of making the most expensive purchase of their lives, there wasn’t a resource to learn about other experiences with a dealership, or especially a particular employee. And there was no way to know if a business was somehow influencing the ratings, or if a disgruntled employee was writing negative reviews out of spite.
That’s where DealerRater stepped in. The first review we published was on January 3, 2003. It took us a year and a half to collect 2000 reviews. Today, we collect that many reviews every single day. Between 2013 and today, we’ve added another million reviews from real consumers, sharing real experiences about the businesses and the employees they’ve interacted with.
Their words are real, relevant and recent, detailing experiences that have occurred over the last 12 months. With our 25 word minimum, we make people actually write about their experience, rather than just a one-word response that doesn’t explain anything about the people or the place. We’re helping people resolve issues they’ve had by offering dealerships the opportunity to respond and rectify the situation. It’s allowed our reviewers to be a trusted source of information, not about the price of the car, but about the right place to purchase it.
Hallmarks like this are meaningful to us, and as we extend our reach, we expect them to come faster.
Here’s to the next million reviews. Thanks to all of you for being a part of it.
